23 июня весь мир отмечает Международный Олимпийский день.
Мероприятие отмечается с января 1948 года, когда Международный олимпийский комитет (МОК) принял решение во время 42-й сессии в швейцарском городке Сент-Мориц ежегодно праздновать Международный Олимпийский день 23 июня.
Дата выбрана не случайно: с целью увековечивания даты создания МОК 23 июня 1894 года, после того, как энтузиаст возрождения олимпийского движения французский барон Пьер де Кубертен огласил свой исторический доклад перед международным атлетическим конгрессом. Решение о проведении в 1896 году в Греции первой Олимпиады было принято комитетом, Пьер Кубертен возглавил созданный тогда же МОК.
Почти через пятьдесят лет после этого события, только в 1948 году, в праздновании Международного Олимпийского дня приняли участие представители ещё девяти национальных олимпийских комитетов стран Европы, Южной и Северной Америки.
Сейчас МОК осуществляет руководство олимпийским движением: в соответствии с Олимпийской хартией Международный Олимпийский Комитет определяет порядок и правила включения какого-либо вида спорта в программу Олимпийских игр, отмечает вклад в развитие олимпийского движения награждением Олимпийским орденом или дипломом и т. п. МОК поддерживает организацию и развитие спорта и спортивных соревнований, обеспечивает регулярное проведение Олимпийских игр.
После начала военных действий на территории ДНР и ЛНР российские спортсмены были лишены возможности выступать за честь России под национальный флагом и национальный гимн, что, безусловно, не делает чести Международному Олимпийскому Комитету.
